Southampton University Trauma Informed Asylum Process

Working with University of Southampton , we designed and illustrated a report about a trauma-informed asylum process. Getting the tone and of the document and the illustrations was key to ensuring the report was sensitive and accurate in its depiction of the asylum process and the experiences of those who have been through it. The styling we developed needed to have a dark yet sensitive feel, while also being sprinkled with optimism.

The report content was co-written with unaccompanied asylum-seeking young people; we wanted the design to reflect this participatory approach too. So, as part of our process we created a toolkit to enable young people with lived experience to provide feedback on the designs, and choose a styling which resonated with their experience.

The project has been well received and reached a wide audience, including being presented to the Home Office. RE:ACTION magazine by University of Southampton has also mentioned the project in their interdisciplinary research issue.

“We really enjoyed working with Noble Studio. At the start of the process we didn’t know what we were looking for, but they helped us to capture our ideas, encourage creativity and narrow down design decisions. Their workshops and toolkits helped us to speak the same language in terms of design, and they were very open to our feedback given the brief was abstract and challenging.”
